We spent the July 4th holiday in Mazama and decided to cap off our weekend on an easy hike up Goat Peak. We then managed to talk James, Virginia, Svenja and the pups Beta and Lupi into joining us. We all met at the Mazama Store at about 10 AM and then caravanned together up NF-5225 -> NF-200. It was slow going up the gravel roads, but they were in good shape for any vehicle.
The trail was well-maintained and easy to follow. We passed through fields of wildflowers and got that delightful high-alpine feeling without much work. The trail was steep until it reached the north ridge of Goat Peak and then it flattened out. We dipped down and then back up toward the summit. By the time we reached the lookout tower, we had lovely views all around us, although with some cloud cover on the highest peaks. We reached the top at 2:20 PM. We saw a handful of parties on the way up but had the summit to ourselves. We couldn’t enter the lookout tower but enjoyed sitting on the porch at the bottom of it.
After having lunch at the tower we reversed course and had a straightforward hike back out. We got back to the cars at 3:40. Highly recommend this one!
