Laura and I had both been meaning to check out Whidbey Island for quite some time. She had heard that the Ebey’s Landing hike was very pretty, so we met up just before 9 AM in Seattle and then carpooled to the Mukilteo Ferry. We managed to sneak onto the 9:30 AM ferry just as it was about to leave, which was very lucky for a weekend morning (we made up for it with a two hour wait for the ferry back). *** side note: if you drive a tiny car like a Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit, you can get a DISCOUNT on Washington State ferries – just tell them at the window that your car is under 14 feet long ***
We arrived at the trailhead just about 10:30 AM and it took us 1.5 hours to do the 3.69 mile loop. The sites to take in on this short hike were pretty great. We started out with a view of the bluff abutting the ocean, then climbed to the top of the bluff where we could see Perego’s Lake, a very fascinating orange-toned lagoon just along the waterfront.

The trail eventually turned sharply left (southeast) and we made a steep descent down the bluff with a couple of switchbacks. Soon we were down on the beach, and were able to stroll along easily at a relatively low tide. What a truly fantastic way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.

Afterward we were sure to hit up Cove Cafe on the Coupeville Wharf for tasty sandwiches, Kapaws Iskreme for killer ice cream cones, and Whidbey Island Winery for a delectable wine tasting. Laura sure does know how to plan a weekend getaway.
